2013 Community Pride Awards
The Hales Corners Environmental Committee announces the Award Winners for 2013.
Garden Awards were judged by the Environmental Committee according to established criteria throughout the 2013 growing season. The following sights received a Lawn Plaque & Ribbon commemorating their horticultural efforts.
BEST COMMERCIAL GARDEN--

That's Amore' Italian Cafe
5080 S. 108th St.

Staff at Amore' say

"We thank Jorge for all his hard work.
He did it all."

BEST FLOWER GARDENS-

Marge and Ed Monahan
11990 N. Ridge Trail

Marge tirelessly keeps her garden beds at peak performance, giving away or exchanging native and exotic plants when they threaten to become over grown. Evidence of Marge's generosity can be seen blossoming throughout the neighborhood.

Frank and Diannne Ettmayer
11429 W. Godsell Ave.

When Hales Corners Elementary School cut down the pine trees next to the Ettmayers a joining property, Frank and Dianne saw on opportunity to beautify the school grounds and neighborhood. Volunteering to cultivate the bare patches left by the pine boughs, hundreds of students now walk past a teeming variety of flowers, shrubs and sedges.

Liz and Rich Roehr
10570 Palmersheim Dr.

The front lawn is more like grassy walkways weaving their way through the artfully arranged gardens that inhabit this shady yard. The shadow on the front porch is cast by one of the largest American Red buds we've ever seen.

BEST VEGETABLE GARDENS--

Debra and Mike Demanovich
5814 S. 109th St.

We were attracted to the raised flower beds that can be seen from the alley. On further investigation Debra educated us on their Aguaponics IBC system, fish farming, rain barrels and rain barrel farming, potatoes growing in straw, trellis's, composting, recycling wood for plant stands and walkways. Debra's lighting designs, painted rocks, and hand crafted bird houses. The raised bed would have been enough to earn an award but Debra and Mike's humble approach to experimenting in holistic gardening rekindled our faith in mankind.

Zoran Radisavcevic
10203 Denis Ave.

After the success Zoran experienced with peach trees he planted while living in the a joining unit of his two family dwelling, he continued to circle the front yard with more peach trees and additional cherry trees after switching units. His front garden is a combination of vegetable and flower varieties.."It's good food" he exclaimed when asked about the rarity of planting vegetables in the front yard.

Natasa Torbica
5225 S. 100th St.

Natasa was surprised her "little garden" won an award. Surrounded by century fence, beautifully maintained, and producing a bountiful harvest, Natasa deserves recognition for a job well done!
